Fly Fishing Basics
Fly Fishing is considered as one of the most versatile and challenging, as well as enjoyable sports. It involves the casting, presentation, and manipulation of an artificial fly to lure, play, and land fish. Its uniqueness lies in the tackle components - rod, reel, line, leader and fly - are used differently from they are used in traditional bait fishing. In fly fishing, you use the fly rod to cast the weighted line that propels a nearly weightless fly to the target area. In comparison to that, other fishing sports use a weighted lure to pull a nearly weightless line off the reel. Below is an example of fly fishing kit.

It is important to connect all the different parts together properly (see the figure below). You will need scissors and clippers to tie different knots. And five connections need to be completed: fly line backing to fly reel, fly line backing to fly line, fly line to leader butt, leader butt to tippet and tippet to fly.

The best way to get started with fly fishing is finding a competent guide. If you don’t have any friends or family who know how to fly fish, you can ask your local fly shop or sporting goods store. In most cases, the staff in fly fishing shop are a great source of knowledge and often offer great tips and technique. You should always tell the shop your experience and what skills you are looking for. It is a good idea to hire a professional fly fishing guide to give you hands-on experience and ask them plenty of questions, such as if they have outfitters license and permits for the public water you will be fishing, if the equipment is included, if you have to purchase the flies, how long the driving will be, anything else is included within the package. Also find out what time of day has been most productive. If it has been the morning, then book the morning trip.
Of course, there are several important questions you need to ask yourself before planning a fly fishing trip: what types of fish I will catch, where I want to go fishing, and what time of the year I like to go. For example, if you like to catch a rainbow trout, you probably want to head to Rocky Mountains, or if you are after bonefish, Belize will be a better place. Whatever species of fish you want to go after, you need to know where they reside and the best places and time to go.
