Fly Fishing Guide For Beginners

Bass Fly Fishing

Bass are found everywhere, stream, lake or pond. Thus bass is one of the most popular sport fish. In general, there are two types of bass, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass.

Largemouth bass have large mouths as the name tells. A largemouth bass eats almost anything that fits into its mouth. Small, aquatic insects make up most of the diet of largemouth bass. As they grow, they start to eat minnow, shiners, perch and crappie. Because largemouth bass are willing to eat anything, the choice of the fly is not so important as proper presentation. Popping bugs are probably the most popular flies used in largemouth bass fly fishing. Streamers, mayflies and larger nymphs are also effective for largemouth bass.

The key for fishing for largemouth bass is it is always different. Sometimes it is the initial pause after the cast that lure the fish, but sometimes you need to make your fly splashes and pops to get their attentions. Make sure to try all alternatives to see which one works.

Largemouth bass prefer warm water temperature ranging from 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Largemouth bass reside in thick weeds, under submerged tree trunks, fallen logs, nearby boulders and rocks, and sometime behind big plants.

Smallmouth bass are known for their sleek and fast. Aquatic insects like caddis flies, mayflies, and crunchy damsels are often on their menu. When they grow bigger, they eat smaller bait fish, such as shiners, minnows, and chubs.

Smallmouth bass prefer cooler water than largemouth bass. So smallmouth bass are more often found on larger boulders, rock piles, and holes on the bottom in cool, rocky lakes and ponds while largemouth bass are often found in weedy areas. In streams, look for smallmouth bass beneath undercut banks, under logs, and in deep pools. Smallmouth bass prefers a slower current so a cool, shaded, slow moving stream is ideal to look for smallmouth bass. One quick note: smallmouth bass tend to travel in groups, so if you catch one at one spot, there probably are more bass at that depth and area. Don’t change spot because you just land a fish.
